TriBeCa is the part of Manhattan that most resembles a neighbourhood rather than a grid, and the Greenwich is the hotel that behaves accordingly. It is independent, it is not large, and the hotel's own line is that no two rooms are alike — which in practice means you should say what you want rather than book a category.
The Shibui Spa downstairs has a lantern-lit pool beneath the reconstructed roof of a Japanese farmhouse; that is the detail everyone who has stayed there mentions first. Off the lobby there is a drawing room and a courtyard, both of which do the work a bar does in a bigger hotel, more quietly.

Who it suits: a few nights in New York where the hotel is part of the reason for the trip, and where cobblestones outside the door are the point.
