Staying in Paris
Paris is small. The twenty arrondissements spiral out from the Louvre like a shell, and the ones a visitor wants are the first eight plus the 16th: you can cross the whole of that on foot in an hour. Which means the choice is not about distance, it is about what you want to hear when you open the window in the morning.
For a stay longer than a few nights an apartment beats a room, and not for the reason people say. It is the kitchen, yes, but mostly it is that a Paris apartment building comes with a street, a baker and a neighbour, and a hotel corridor does not. Almost every address in this edition is a serviced apartment or an apart-hotel for that reason.
Where to sleep, and what it means
- Le Marais, 3rd and 4th
- The oldest streets still standing, narrow and busy until late. Best for a first long stay: everything is walkable and nothing closes early. Noisier than it looks on a map.
- 1st and 2nd, around the Louvre
- The centre proper. Quiet at night because few people actually live there, and five minutes from the two stations that take you to the airports.
- Saint-Germain, 6th
- The left bank the films are about. Beautiful, expensive, and the one place where a courtyard apartment is worth paying for over a street one.
- The 16th arrondissement
- West of the Arc de Triomphe, residential, embassy quiet, with the largest apartments in the city. Where families and long stays end up. Ten minutes from the centre by car, further on foot than it looks.
What a visitor asks first
- How long is a Paris stay worth taking an apartment for?
- Four nights is the line. Below that a hotel is simpler. Above it the kitchen, the laundry and the extra room start to matter more than room service, and the price per night of a serviced apartment usually falls with the length of the stay — ask the address directly, because that discount is rarely published.
- Which side of the river should I sleep on?
- Right bank for business, shopping and late restaurants; left bank for quiet, bookshops and walking. If you are here for work, the right bank saves you twenty minutes twice a day.
- Do I need a car?
- No, and it will cost you more than the apartment in parking. The metro runs until roughly one in the morning, later at weekends. Take a car only for the airports and for the 16th.
