Sutton Place is the quiet pocket in the East 50s between Midtown and the river, and East 56th Street is inside it. It is a residential neighbourhood that happens to be four blocks from the offices, and it is also within walking distance of Memorial Sloan Kettering, the Hospital for Special Surgery and NewYork-Presbyterian — which is the unstated reason a great many month-long New York stays happen here.
Seventy-six furnished apartments in the former Sutton Hotel, a pre-war building. One-bedrooms run 550 to 850 square feet, 51 to 79 square metres; two-bedrooms 1,100 to 1,300, which is 102 to 121. There is an indoor heated pool, a gym open around the clock, a business room, wine lockers, and valet laundry. Some suites have a terrace or a solarium.
The operator says plainly that there is no restaurant in the building — the lounge pours drinks on weekday evenings and the staff book you a table elsewhere. It also says the apartments are designed for visits of a month or longer, so do not come here for three nights. No rate is published.
Who it suits: a month or a season in New York with a real address and a kitchen, especially a stay built around the hospitals or a long assignment in Midtown.
